Open Society Foundations/University of Nottingham Scholarships Guidelines

The Open Society Foundations / University of Nottingham scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision makers, and opinion formers in their own country. Upon completion of their studies in the UK, scholars are expected to return to their home country to resume their studies or work there. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a master's degree.

The scholarships are available for study for:

MPA Public Health 
MPH Public Health (International Health) 
MA Environmental Management 
LLM in Human Rights Law (modules relating to Mental Disability and International Human Rights are available within these courses) 
LLM International Law 
MA Social and Global Justice 
MA Global Citizenship, Identities and Human Rights 
MA International Social Policy 
Each scholarship provides twelve months' tuition fees at the University of Nottingham, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only), and return air travel from the scholar's home country.

Eligibility
The scholarships are open to applicants from Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Egypt, and Lebanon.

Applicants must:

be nationals of, and resident in one of the selected countries during the academic year in which they apply for the award; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident; 
display intellectual ability and leadership potential; 
already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a degree of an equivalent standard to a good UK second-class Honours degree; 
have passed an appropriate English language test by the time of taking up the award; 
not have already received or be currently receiving financial benefit from a previous HMG fully funded Scholarship; 
return to their home country at the end of their scholarship period to continue their studies / work there. 
Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied outside of their home country.

Employees, employees' relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of local Open Society Foundations representative offices in the region and eligible countries, and the participating universities will not be eligible to apply for these awards.

The Self-Assessment Form whereby you acknowledge your compliance with the eligibility criteria for this scholarship program. 
Deadline
The completed forms and supporting documents must be returned to your local Open Society Foundations representative office no later than February 6, 2012. One original set of the application pack and two photocopies thereof must be submitted.

Selection Process
Short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview and an English language test in their home country during April 2012. Applicants should keep their schedules free for these dates. Applicants will be informed by the local Open Society Foundations representative office whether they have been shortlisted or not. Interviews will be carried out by representatives of the Open Society Foundations. In certain cases, there may also be a panel member representing the interests of the University.

Final awards will be decided jointly by the University and the Open Society Foundations.

Please note that all successful applicants will be invited to attend a one-month preparatory academic writing summer school in August 2012. The Open Society Scholarship Programs' Pre-Academic Summer Program is designed to prepare scholarship grantees for a successful academic experience in the UK. Successful applicants will be provided with the opportunity to refine their research and writing skills through intensive courses in academic writing and social sciences. The exact date and location of the summer school will be available at a later stage in the selection process.

Postdoctoral fellowships in the area of Bacterial Metabolic Engineering

Job description
We are seeking two highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral fellows to become part of the founding team in the Bacterial Metabolic Engineering Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark. The core group at the Center is focusing on applied strategic research in the area of metabolic engineering and systems biology.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

We seek to fill two postdoctoral positions in the area of metabolic engineering for the production of functional food additives using bacterial cell factories. The successful candidates will be working on projects with direct commercial potential. Pathways to promising targets will be identified, expressed and optimized in bacterial host organisms such as E. coli. New methods for automated high throughput cloning will also be developed. The successful candidates will become part of a large interdisciplinary team of scientists, where there will be opportunities for collaboration with other research groups focusing on metabolomics, in silico systems biology, metagenomics and plant biochemistry.
Qualifications
Mandatory requirements:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in relevant field
  • High quality publication record within PhD research field
  • Strong work ethic and motivation to succeed within a competitive research field

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Proven track record within metabolic engineering of bacterial host organisms, molecular biology, high throughput cloning technologies, analytical techniques for metabolite analysis, enzyme purification, enzymatic assays, and/or experience with small scale fermentation.
  • Training from leading research laboratories

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years, with the possibility of 1 year extension.

Monbukagakusho Program Penataran Guru 2012  merupakan program beasiswa dari pemerintah Jepang untuk semua pengajar, mulai dari SD, SMP, SMA, SMK, baik negeri maupun swasta di seluruh Indonesia untuk belajar selama 1,5 tahun di Jepang. PhD Position: Fatigue Crack Growth Prediction, UGhent

Prof. Wim Van Paepegem, dari Mechanics of Materials and Structures groups, UGhent, sedang mencari kandidat PhD untuk riset di bidang Matherials and Structures. Kandidat PhD yang terpilih akan melakukan simulasi Fatigue Crack Growth.

Qualifications

  • Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or similar;
  • have a strong background in numerical modelling, fracture mechanics and finite elements (if possible XFEM methods);
  • familiar with mechanics of materials, experimental testing methods and computational techniques. Knowledge of composite materials, finite element software (e.g. ABAQUS, SAMCEF, ANSYS,…), programming languages (Fortran, C++) or Unix/Linux environment is an advantage;
  • English writing and speaking is absolutely required.

A number of PhD scholarships are available at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, DTU Nanotech, starting in the winter/spring of 2012. The subject of the PhD project must be within one of the main research areas of the department:

  • Cleanroom based micro- and nanofabrication
  • Nanomaterials
  • Polymer micro- and nanoengineering
  • Synthesis and self assembly of nanostructures
  • Miniaturised sensor technology
  • Micro- and nanobased energy and environmental technology
  • Lab-on-a-chip technology
  • Nanobiotechnology
  • Diagnostics and drug delivery
  • Theory of micro- and nanosystems

Qualifications
Candidates should have (or soon obtain) a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level. Candidates may apply prior to ob­tai­ning their master’s degree, but cannot begin the PhD education before having received the grade.

To apply for these scholarships candidates must obtain an agreement with a supervisor at DTU Nanotech concerning a specific project. To be considered for a scholarship, candidates must enclose endorsement from a supervisor and a project description. See under “Application”.
